2020 Subaru Outback Preview

In 1995, the Subaru Outback was introduced to the world and the crossover was born. A quarter century later, this iconic car is about to enter its sixth generation. So, what can drivers in Mobile, Daphne, and Fairhope expect from the next model?

Koby Subaru looks at all of the exciting changes you can look forward to in this 2020 Subaru Outback preview.

2020 Subaru Outback: What’s New?

The 2020 Subaru Outback offers upgraded features everywhere from your lineup of engines to the technology inside your crossover. Some of the areas you can expect to see new technology include:

The 2020 Subaru Outback is expected to follow its sedan counterpart, the 2020 Subaru Legacy, and feature a new set of underpinnings. This will result in more agile handling, sharper turns, and an even more rigid frame that’s both stronger and sturdier than before.

Under the hood, the 2020 Subaru Outback will have the same base engine, but its output will increase. The 2.5L SUBARU BOXER® 4-cylinder powertrain will now be able to produce up to 182 horsepower.

Meanwhile, the 3.6L SUBARU BOXER® 6-cylinder engine will be replaced by an exciting 2.4L Turbocharged SUBARU BOXER® 4-cylinder powertrain. This engine comes over from the larger Subaru Ascent and is expected to reach up to 260 horsepower.

Both the infotainment system and the driver assistance features will receive a substantial upgrade in the 2020 Outback.

You’ll notice a big change the moment you take a seat inside. The dashboard will now offer a large 11.6-inch touchscreen. This monitor will have the same functionality as before, but it’s set up with a vertical orientation.

Subaru EyeSight® still comes standard but adds a new driver-assistance feature. The DriverFocus™ Distraction Mitigation system comes over from the Subaru Forester. It uses sensors and facial recognition software to detect when you’re tired or distracted.

For example, if you take your eyes off the road for longer than three seconds, it will start beeping to remind you to focus. If you don’t respond, the system can actually bring your Outback to a complete stop.

2020 Subaru Outback: What’s Familiar?

  • The 2020 Subaru Outback will look familiar. While it will have underpinnings that match the new Subaru global platform and a larger touchscreen, the basic design of both the interior and exterior will look very similar to the 2019 models.
  • Just like all Subaru Outback models and trim levels, the sixth generation will continue to have standard Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive.
  • The Subaru EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology system will continue to come standard and help prevent accidents by providing you with more awareness during your drive.
